Aylsham Backs the Liberal Democrats

On Thursday 22nd November the Liberal Democrats successfully held the Aylsham County Council Division with a massive increase in their share of the vote.

April Pond, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Broadland, said:

"A big thank you to all of the local residents in Aylsham, Buxton, Marsham and the other villages who gave there support to the Liberal Democrats last night.

"Many people told us that they wanted to support out positive campaign to keep fighting for St Michael's hospital and to get a better deal for the Aylsham area.

"Many local residents were shocked that Mid Norfolk's Tory MP had said he thought that the fight for St Michael's was over and turned to the Liberal Democrats who are committed to carrying on with the battle for the hospital.

"This by-election highlights the battle to come in the new Broadland constituency. Independent election experts have said that the new seat will see a tough contest between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives. Labour are clearly out of the race in Broadland."

The result in full: Lib Dem 1696 (60.6%), Con 854 (30.5%), Lab 177 (6.3), UKIP 71 (2.5%), turnout 38%. Swing Con to Lib Dem 15%.

The by-election was caused by the death of Liberal Democrat County Councillor Graham Rix.

The victorious Liberal Democrat candidate was David Harrison who is also an Aylsham District Councillor.
