Committee says 'no' to new Eaton phone mast.

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 14th Jun 2007

Liberal Democrats in Eaton are pleased that the City Council Planning Committee has unanimously refused the application for a 17.5 m mast to be sited on the Eaton slip Road, close to Eaton Post Office.

The mast would have been in a conservation area.

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Eaton, Rosalind Wright, who attended the

meeting and spoke against the application said afterwards "The decision to refuse the siting of the mast in this sensitive area is sensible. It is

very much in line with the wishes of local residents who submitted a 428

name petition against the mast. The refusal was on grounds of visual intrusion and its adverse effects on the amenity of local residents."

Fellow councillor Judith Lubbock who also attended the meeting commented

"The current siting of the mast on the Newmarket Road continues to be an

eyesore and a contentious issue. Eaton Councillors will continue to press the '02'

mobile phone company to find an alternative site acceptable to the local community."
