Academic and government reports have consistently stressed the importance of street lighting in cutting crime and anti-social behaviour. Despite this areas of Norwich still suffer inadequate street lighting.

Improved street lighting has been found to cut crime and make people feel safer and therefore more willing to go out on the streets at night and reclaim their communities from fear of crime.

Improvements in lighting and targeted CCTV coverage are vital in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour according to Liberal Democrat City Councillor, Jeremy Hooke. He is keen to ensure that people feel safer in his Thorpe Hamlet ward "It is important that the residents of Thorpe Hamlet feel safe and secure in their homes, increasing lighting and CCTV coverage should help to do this".

Councillor Hooke will this week call upon the relevant councils to do more and will focus on the Elm Hill Park area of the city.
